Don’t Look Away To Hide Your Feelings

Don't look away to hide your feelings

Don’t look at me like that, please look down. Do not you see it? You look at me in a way that reaches my soul. I don’t know what these eyes have that speak for you. I look at you and I know how you feel, your mouth doesn’t need to say a single word.

But how is it possible that your gaze says so much? Maybe he just says it to me. Maybe it is I who have a special gift and be able to interpret your gaze? I always thought you had the ability to express a whole universe of emotions with your eyes only, but maybe I am able to decipher what your gaze suggests.

Is it true what I think of her gaze?

But is what I say true or am I mixing my desires and fears with reality?

Why do you keep looking at me like that? I don’t want to see what your eyes are asking of me. Ah! I know, look down! I’ll distract myself with the phone. The secret of the phone’s success is that it allows you to take your eyes off those around you, from the looks that ask to be looked at, from the looks of those who want to interact with you.

Just look down and the pain, hope and sadness of others disappear. Nobody will judge you because you are looking at the phone screen. Maybe not everyone does it? I looked up. You keep looking at me like this …

I don’t know how you do it, but you shake my soul. Why do you provoke these emotions in me without asking my permission? I can’t avoid them! Ah yeah, I just have to look away one more time. Eye that does not see …

Can’t you see that your gaze awakens my compassion? Yes, your gaze accompanied by your silence. Now I’ll have to do something! Don’t look at me like that, I know what you’re thinking and I can’t help but feel the same. There! Take some of my lasagna, but savor it, you know it’s my favorite dish and I’m very hungry …

I only ask you one thing in return, stop looking at me like that, please …

Why does the gaze of others generate emotions in us?

The mechanism responsible for empathy we experience has a name and is called the limbic system. The limbic system is a complex brain structure that handles a lot of information. Basically it  has the task of awakening, turning off and managing our emotions based on the information perceived by our senses.

A look, a song, a stinging pain or the aroma of freshly brewed coffee are intercepted by our senses, the bark gives them meaning and the limbic system associates them with an emotion.

The limbic system, however, has a feature that makes it very special. It is, in fact, an open structure that can enter into connection with the limbic system of our interlocutor, in this way we can feel the exact same things that he feels. Thanks to this complex system, we can feel empathy, become sad when our child cries, rejoice when the partner achieves a great result and exalt ourselves when our favorite team scores.

Don’t forget, next time someone looks at you, don’t look away to hide what you’re feeling. Look people in the eye and you will understand what they feel and the emotion they arouse in you.
